Before using for the first time
Clean the appliance
^ Remove any protective foil.
^ Wipe down all surfaces with a damp
cloth, then dry.
The metal parts have a protective
coating. This will cause an odour the
first time the appliance is used. Note
that the odour and any vapours will
disappear after a brief period of time
and are not a sign of malfunction or
a defective appliance.
9

Operation
Raising and lowering the
browning unit
Switching on and off
Do not leave the appliance
unattended while in use.
^ To raise the browning unit, turn the
left-hand control to Extend ("-").
The appliance is switched on when the
right control knob is turned to the
desired setting, and is switched off
when the knob is turned to "0".
The browning unit will automatically
extend to its full height, even when you
release the control knob back to "ß ".
You can stop the unit at any height by
briefly turning the control knob to "e".
The knob can be turned clockwise or
counter-clockwise to switch the
appliance On and Off.
^ Turn the left control knob to Retract
("e"), and hold it until the desired
height is reached or the browning
unit is fully retracted.
The ON light comes on when the
appliance is in operation.
As soon as a certain temperature is
reached, the residual heat indicator
comes on as well. The indicator will not
go out until the ceramic glass plate of
the browning unit is safe to touch.
The browning unit can be fully
retracted only once the residual heat
indicator goes out.
The appliance will not heat up
unless the browning unit is raised to
at least 2 3/4" (70 mm).

Operation
Browning
Useful tips
^ Raise the browning unit.
You can use the appliance to melt
cheese over such items as meat,
(toasted) bread, and vegetables. You
can also use the browning element for
desserts, to caramelize the sugar
topping on creme brûlée, for instance.
^ Place the dish you wish to brown on
the ledge.
^ Lower the browning unit until the
heating element is 1 3/16" - 1 15/16"
(30 - 50 mm) away from the top of the
food.
However, the appliance is not
suitable for reheating food
^ Turn the control knob to setting "12".
(store-bought dishes, leftovers).
The food will brown in 3-5 minutes,
depending on the desired result.
Brown only one dish at a time.
After use
^ Switch the appliance off.
^ After each use, clean the appliance
while it is still somewhat warm to the
touch (see "Cleaning and care").
Keeping food warm
Food items can be kept warm for a few
minutes under the browning unit.
^ Do not lower the browning unit until
the residual heat indicator has gone
out.
^ Raise the browning unit.
^ Place the dish you wish to keep warm
on the ledge.
^ Lower the browning unit until the
heating element is approx. 3 15/16"
(100 mm) away from the top of the
food.
^ Turn the operating knob to a medium
setting.

Safety features
Safe retraction
Obstruction protection
To avoid damaging the appliance, your As soon as the browning unit
grill is equipped with a retraction safety encounters any resistance with a
device. The browning unit can be fully
retracted only once the appliance has
cooled sufficiently, i.e., after the
diameter greater than 3/8 " (10 mm)
between the browning unit and the
ledge, the process is interrupted and
the browning unit automatically rises
again by about 3/8" (10 mm).
residual heat indicator has gone out.
Height recognition
The unit heats up only when the
browning unit is raised at least 2 3/4"
(70 mm) above the ledge.
Overheat protection
The halogen heating element in the
browning unit is equipped with
overheat protection. This feature
automatically switches off the heating
element if the ceramic cooktop is in
danger of overheating. Once the
ceramic surface has cooled down
sufficiently, the heating element
automatically switches back on. You
will recognize activation of the overheat
protection if the heat keeps switching
on and off at the highest power setting.

Care and cleaning
To avoid damge, do not use the
following cleaning products:
Warning: NEVER use a steam
cleaner to clean this appliance.
Steam could reach the electrical
components and cause a short
circuit.
– products containing washing soda,
acids/alkalis, ammonia, or bleach,
– products containing scale removers,
– stain and rust removers,
Clean the appliance on a regular basis,
preferably after each use. First allow
the appliance to cool down. After any
cleaning with liquid, wipe the appliance
dry. This will help prevent limescale
deposits.
– scouring cleansers, e.g., scouring
powder, scouring liquid, pumice
stones,
– products containing solvents,
– dishwasher cleaner,
– grill or oven spray cleaners,
– glass cleaners,
– scouring brushes and sponges (such
as pot scrubbers), or used sponges
that still contain abrasive cleanser
residue.
– sharp objects (they can damage the
seals between the frame and the
countertop).

Care and cleaning
Stainless steel
Built-in frame
Use a non-abrasive stainless steel
cleanser for cleaning the appliance. To
help keep the appliance clean longer,
we recommend using a stainless steel

Do not use stainless steel cleanser
on areas where there is printing. It
will rub away the printing. Instead,

printed areas.
First, remove any coarse residue with a
damp cloth.
Next, clean the surface with a special
cleaner for glass ceramic and stainless

paper towel or a clean cloth. Do not
apply cleaner while the surface is still
hot, as this can leave spots. Follow the
instructions indicated by the

The ledge can be removed for easier
cleaning of the ledge and the

When re-inserting the ledge, check that
it is positioned correctly. If it is not
positioned correctly, the browning unit
will not lower completely.

operation. Failure to do so increases
the risk of fire.
Be sure to comply with the

clearance distances listed below.
The appliance must not be

permanently sealed into the countertop
when installed. The sealing strip under
the edge of the appliance provides a
sufficient seal for the countertop. See
"Sealing".
The cabinetry and venting hood
should be installed first to prevent
damage to the cooktop.
Keep this instruction book in a safe
place for refernce and pass it on to
any further user.
The countertop must be bonded

with heat resistant (212 °F/100 °C)
adhesive to prevent distortion or
dissolving.

designed for maritime use or for use in
mobile installations such as recreational
vehicles or aircraft. However, under
certain conditions it may be possible for
installation in these applications. Please

Department with specific requirements.
The appliance should not be

installed immediately beside an electric
barbeque (CS 1312/1322) or the Tepan
Yaki (CS 1326). A minimum distance of
5 7/8" (150 mm) must be maintained

The grouting a and shaded area under
the appliance frame must be flat and

sufficient seal for the countertop.
